Many business owners know that they need to be on social media, but they don't know where to start. What platforms should they be on? How often should they post? What kind of content should they share? And perhaps most importantly, how can they use social media to actually grow their business?
Here's a quick overview of how to use social media for your business. By following these tips, you can get the most out of your social media efforts and start seeing real results in terms of increased reach, engagement, and sales.
1. Figure out which platforms your audience is using.
Social media is no longer just about Facebook and Twitter. There are now dozens of different platforms with hundreds of millions of users each. So, before you start creating accounts left and right, take a step back and figure out which platforms your audience is actually using. If you're selling B2B products or services, LinkedIn is a great place to start. If you're selling B2C products or services, Facebook and Instagram are probably better bets. Once you've identified which platform(s) to focus on, you can move on to the next step.
2. Create high-quality content that provides value.
The key to success on social media is creating content that provides value to your target audience. Regardless of which platform(s) you're using, your content should be interesting, informative, and/or entertaining. If it's not, people won't want to engage with it—and they certainly won't want to buy what you're selling. That's why it's important to take the time to create quality content that will actually resonate with your audience members. Otherwise, you're just wasting your time (and theirs).
3. Post regularly (but don't overdo it).
If you want people to actually see your content, you need to post on a regular basis—but beware of posting too often. If you clog up people's feeds with 10+ posts per day, they're going to get annoyed and tune you out completely. So, find a happy medium—aim for 1-2 posts per day on each platform—and stick to it as much as possible. Consistency is key when it comes to social media success.
4. Engage with other users (and potential customers).
One of the best ways to grow your business through social media is by engaging with other users—especially those who could become customers down the line. Like and comment on other people's posts (when appropriate), join conversations, and provide helpful answers or resources when possible. The more active you are on social media, the greater the chance people will take notice of your brand—and eventually do business with you. Just don't come across as too sales-y; that will turn people off really quick.
While social media may seem like a daunting task for busy business owners, it doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming—if you follow these tips! By focusing on quality content, staying consistent with your posting schedule, and engaging with other users, you can use social media as an effective tool for growing your business... without pulling all your hair out in the process :)
